Our guest speaker, Séamus O’Brien from the Loup Historical Society, will explore the remarkable history behind Mid Ulster’s unusually tall families. Discover the truth behind the so-called “Giant Gene,” the real lives behind the legend, and how this inherited condition became part of our local story.
The talk will also shine a light on local figures including Charles O’Brien, born in The Loup, one of Ireland’s most famous historical giants. Known in London as the “Irish Giant,” Charles O’Brien toured Britain in the 1700s and became one of the most talked-about men of his time. His life story – from rural Mid Ulster to international fame – remains both fascinating and poignant.
We will also hear about the legendary Knipe twins of Magherafelt, celebrated locally for their extraordinary height and remembered as part of Mid Ulster’s long association with familial gigantism. Their story forms an important link in understanding how this rare inherited condition appeared across generations in the area.
From folklore to medical history, this promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking evening celebrating a unique chapter of our heritage.
Come early, enjoy Gorta, and settle in for a great night of local history. All welcome!
